Each year Virginia Dare Cruises & Marina organizes The Annual Virginia Dare Flotilla for Toys Boat Parade. The Flotilla is led by the 19th Century Sidewheeler, Virginia Dare.
The evening parade and it’s dazzling light show cruises from the Virginia Dare Marina to Hales ford Bridge, back down the Roanoke channel to Smith Mountain Lake State Park and back to port. Dozens of beautifully decorated and lighted boats grace the Lake for revelers on the shorelines to enjoy. Many holiday parties are scheduled to coincide with the Flotilla For Toys. You can enter your boat by calling Virginia Dare Marina at 540-297-7100 or 800-721-DARE.
All participants and spectators are asked to bring an unwrapped toy for the benefit of area children of need . Toys are distributed by Lake Christian Ministries. In addition, many collection points are set up for area residents to drop off toys for the event. Collection points are advertised in the media several weeks before the Flotilla.
The 2008 Flotilla For Toys Boat Parade was comprised of 15 decorated boats with 160 people aboard. Fourteen hundred (1400) toys were donated by participants, spectators and area residents -- a tremendous success.
